The first wearable that measures awareness
The problem
We track heart rate, sleep architecture, HRV, steps, temperature, and blood oxygen with clinical precision. The body is more readable to its own instruments than it has ever been. What none of these instruments detect is whether anyone is present to receive the information, whether the awareness that gives health its meaning has wandered off while the data accumulates.
The Mio Ring measures how long you remain aware that you are alive. We call that duration residency. No other device has attempted to capture it.
Awareness here means something precise. It is the recognition that consciousness is occurring, independent of what you happen to be conscious of. You can be aware while reading or while sitting in traffic. The content changes constantly. The recognition that you are the one experiencing it is what the ring detects, and what vanishes the moment a thought absorbs you completely.
The ring
Aerospace titanium. PVD coated. 2.8mm thin, the width of a wedding band. Clinical-grade PPG, accelerometer, and temperature sensors repurposed to detect something no wearable has attempted. The presence of the observer.
How it works
Touch your forefinger to your thumb, on either hand. Any finger works, but the forefinger is the natural starting point. In that moment, notice that awareness is present, stripped of content, reduced to the bare fact of observation. The ring detects the gesture and begins monitoring. It says nothing. No vibration, no confirmation. It watches while you watch.
The next morning, you see how long that awareness lasted before a thought carried you away. Three seconds, or ten, or a full minute. That number, accumulated across days and weeks, is your residency duration.
Try it now
You don't need the ring to begin the practice. Touch your forefinger to your thumb. Notice awareness. Then tap below and hold presence for as long as you can before a thought takes over.
Touch your forefinger to your thumb. Notice that awareness is present. Tap the circle, then tap again when a thought carries you away.
The metric
Residency is the total confirmed span of observational awareness within a given period. The composite sensor signature measures the actual duration during which awareness was present and sustained, counted in seconds and accumulated across each day.
Fourteen days of residency. Each line represents one day of confirmed awareness.
A second metric emerges over months. The Practice Maturity Index tracks how the ratio of gesture-initiated to spontaneously detected awareness shifts as the practice deepens. You begin by triggering awareness deliberately. Eventually, the ring detects it arriving on its own.
The companion app
The morning review shows yesterday's sessions, durations, and the long arc of your practice maturity. All of it delivered after the fact, never while it would interrupt the awareness it measures.
Commitments
Every absence here is a deliberate design decision, a commitment that protects the practice from the attention economy the rest of the industry serves.
Mio Hacking
We have spent two decades optimizing the container. Glucose curves, peptide protocols, fasting windows, sleep architecture. Biohacking treats the body as a system that can be read, adjusted, and improved through deliberate intervention. The logic is mechanical and it moves in one direction. Find the variable, move the number, and the span extends. What no protocol addresses is whether the inhabitant is present for the longer life it produces.
Mio hacking begins one step earlier. The body ages along a fixed trajectory. Awareness, when it has learned to observe from beyond the body's noise, does not follow the same arc. The physician at seventy who has cultivated this faculty sees more than the distracted thirty-year-old scrolling through a longevity podcast. The span of knowing can grow while the span of living contracts. That is the dimension the Mio Ring measures.
Scientific foundations
The composite awareness signature draws on converging lines of peer-reviewed evidence. The novel claim is that correlating these signals through a ring can approximate sustained awareness without EEG. It is testable, and will be tested through formal validation studies with contemplative science laboratories.
HRV Coherence
PPG-derived HRV at the finger validated to r² = 0.980 against ECG. Long-term meditators show distinct coherence patterns during sustained attention.
Respiratory Signatures
Respiratory rate derived from PPG waveform modulation. Experienced practitioners show stabilization patterns distinguishable from ordinary relaxation.
Micro-Movement
Accelerometer-based stillness indices correlate with sustained attentional states. Movement coherence provides a behavioral layer independent of autonomic signals.
Validation Partners
Algorithm validation planned with contemplative science labs using EEG ground truth across a cohort of practitioners at varying experience levels.
A different question
Every other wearable
How is your body doing?
The Mio Ring
Are you there?
Begin
Touch your forefinger to your thumb. Notice that you are aware. That's the whole practice. The ring measures what you've already begun.
Noted. We'll be in touch.
